National Payment Corporation of India (NPCI) in collaboration with the Department of Financial Services has developed e-RUPI, a prepaid e-Voucher for payment of services sponsored by a public or a private organization. The e-RUPI would provide a digital token that would be person & purpose specific and would ensure that the intended benefits directly reach the targeted person.

As a first use case, e-RUPI was used to facilitate the payment of COVID vaccination private COVID vaccination centers. Going forward, e-RUPI is expected to have a wider range of applications across ministries for delivery of different kinds of goods and services. Similarly, e-RUPI can be issued by private organizations like corporates, NGOs etc. for targeted delivery of services. e-RUPI will enable cashless payment at various merchant outlets. The funds required for the issuance of an e - voucher will be managed by the issuer banks associated with the sponsoring organization. A web-based portal has been developed by the National Health Authority (NHA) to aggregate the demand for e-RUPI vouchers for eligible individuals and share their details with the concerned  issuer bank for the issuance of e-RUPI.
